Exponent Fold-Outs

Students will create "power"-ful resources while learning about exponents.

Lesson Plan

Supplies Needed

Gather all the supplies needed to bring your craft ideas to life! From paints and markers to glue and scissors, our crafts section has everything to spark creativity and make every project truly special.

Steps

  • Step 1

Exponents are a way to represent numbers that are being multiplied repeatedly by themselves. Have students practice a few equations using numbers raised to the (x) power.

  • Step 2

Ask students to cut a long piece of paper into three or four strips and then accordion-fold each strip. Have them illustrate various expressions with exponents. For example, the first panel might show 2 to the 4th power, then the second, third, and fourth panels would show 2x, and the fifth panel would show =16

  • Step 3

Repeat this with different number expressions on the remaining strips of paper. Students might choose to decorate and title the first panel and then begin the number expressions on the subsequent ones.

Standards

MATH: Create models that demonstrate math concepts and attend to precision.

MATH: Write and evaluate numerical expressions involving whole-number exponents.

Adaptations

Students can create fold-out references for other math facts, such as a panels that depict times tables for different numbers or a guide to different geometric shapes.

Have students create a guide for finding square roots.
